Who we are

““For me, ceramics have been a sanctuary—a place of surrender and discovery,” Castle reflects. “Being mostly self-taught has granted me the freedom to explore endlessly—not just the materiality of ceramics, but the delicate interplay of light, form, and balance required to unify them.”

About the Artist

Dana Castle is the artist behind Crosland + Emmons, a sculptural practice working primarily in ceramics and light.

Her journey with clay began with a fascination for individual forms and the possibilities that emerged when seemingly unrelated pieces were brought together. What started as an exploration of material gradually evolved into a distinctive sculptural language, where fragments, textures, and unexpected compositions became central to her work.

Working intuitively, Castle allows the creative process to guide each piece. There is a sense of discovery in her approach, a willingness to experiment, to change direction, and to embrace what happens along the way. She is as interested in the process of making as she is in the finished object.

The introduction of light brought another dimension to her work. Illumination became a way to reveal surfaces, create shadows, and bring an entirely different presence to the ceramic form. Today, her practice moves freely between illuminated objects and sculpture, with neither defined by traditional expectations of function.

Each work is individually conceived and made by hand. Rather than creating identical pieces, Castle approaches each new form as an opportunity to explore something different.

Through Crosland + Emmons, she continues to develop a body of work that reflects her curiosity, her connection to material, and her belief that the most compelling objects are often those that cannot be repeated.
